Migraines are a mystery among those who are medical professionals. They are difficult to cope with and may be misunderstood by friends and family of the one suffering. It can be hard to explain the intense pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound that often accompany migraines. They are much more than a really bad headache. In fact, they are not headaches but a neurological disorder.
Certain things are known to trigger migraines. They are:
- Improper brain chemicals levels
- Intense physical activity
- Factors within one’s environment
- A previous injury or head trauma, even if it was not severe
Is Help for Migraines Available?
Visiting one’s family physician for help with a migraine will more-than-likely result in prescription medication to alleviate the pain while it is occurring or something to try to head it off before it happens. Such things as antidepressants, beta-blockers, and anti-seizure drugs have been used to help with migraines. While these may relieve the pain of migraines temporarily, they may still occur if the underlying cause it not being addressed. These medications also come with unwanted and possibly dangerous side effects.
Another popular suggestion is that one keeps a migraine diary to try to identify and then avoid potential triggers. Things to keep track of are:
- Weather changes
- Environmental changes
- Temperature changes
Migraines Relieved Through Upper Cervical Chiropractic
The atlas and axis are the top bones of the spine. If either are misaligned by just ¼ of a millimeter, it can cause major problems throughout the body. The bones of the upper cervical spine are particularly susceptible to misalignment due to their location and shape. If they move out of place, they can put undue pressure on the brainstem causing it to send improper signals to and from the brain and body. This can lead to migraines.
Using a gentle method here at our Lacey, Washington office, we are able to help the bones move back into alignment. This restores communication and can lead to fewer migraines. Some have seen them go away and not return!
